Currently… [August Edition]

Lately, I’ve been seeing these really fun lists showing up around the blogosphere. I first saw the idea for a “Currently” post on Sometimes Sweet. It’s a neat snap shot as to what a particular blogger is thinking about, enjoying, planning etc, at any given point in time. And since I’ve had nearly NO time in the kitchen the past 2 weeks, I thought I’d share something a little different.

The past two weeks have been incredibly busy preparing for my little sister’s wedding which was held this past weekend. It was amazingly fantastic! But, I will write more about that later. And don’t worry, I will have time this week to share some new recipes and finally get a start on the new features I have been planning.

If you create your own “Currently” post, please add a link to it in the comments section. I would love to read what you have to say :)

Currently, I’m…

Dreaming About: Travelling! I cannot stop thinking about planning a trip and going on a great adventure. Lately, Jesse and I have been discussing going to Iceland next spring. Fingers crossed we can pull it off :) Where are you dreaming of travelling to next?

Reading: Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda. I’m 100 pages into the book and am finding it to be a really good read. The story switches between a young couple in the US and a woman in India who has recently given up a child for adoption. I can honestly say I’m already interested in the storyline and anxious to see what happens to all of the characters. What are you reading this summer?

Loving: Meatless Mondays Cookbook. It has an awesome selection of recipes and simple, quick ideas for seasonal breakfast, lunches, dinners, snacks and desserts. Plus, the foreword is by the one-and-only Sir Paul McCartney! :) The photography is also extremely impressive. I love a good cookbook with stunning photography. It makes my heart happy. *hehe*

Watching: Big Brother 14. I don’t normally watch a lot of reality television, but I watch BB every single summer. My guilty pleasure! Have you been watching it this season?

Anticipating: The fall. I adore the fall months so much. I love the milder weather, warm, comfy sweaters, cuddly blankets, pumpkin flavoured anything, hot cups of cocoa, and all of the fall-related foods! Thanksgiving is my favourite holiday, with Christmas a very close second. I need roasted sweet potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pie ASAP.

Listening To: My Head is an Animal by Of Monsters and Men. The album is fantastic! I cannot stop listening to it. Of Monsters and Men is a group from Iceland with two lead singers. I adore the voices of both the male and female vocalists. The music is somewhat reminiscent of Mumford and Sons. Speaking of which, I cannot wait for their new album coming out in late September!!! Do you have any music recommendations? I love checking out new music.

Planning On: Seeing the new Woody Allen movie To Rome with Love. I love Woody Allen movies and cannot wait to check out the latest one. Although, I am debating on also seeing the new Batman movie. I’ve heard that it’s really good. I’ve also been planning on going on some picnics before the end of summer and hopefully a quick camping trip at the end of the month with Jesse.

Working On: Eating more consistently. I have a tendency to eat healthy, but not regularly enough. I let too much time go between meals and am finding I am not feeling well at points throughout the day. I’ve started seeing a dietician to help me get back on track.

Wishing: I felt less self-conscious about blogging. As much as I love blogging, I often feel very self-conscious about the content and the photography. It’s a battle to tame my inner critic sometimes. Do you ever have that problem? Sometimes I wish that I could just be okay with being “new” at something and accept that everyone has to start somewhere – that everyone will improve with hard work and practice. My goal is to start enjoying the process and focus less on the end product.

Reflecting On: My sister’s wedding this past weekend. It was a truly lovely event. She looked so happy, so beautiful. The ceremony was touching and the reception wonderful. My sister had every single detail perfect and so reflective of her tastes. The flowers were stunning, the cake beautiful, and the centrepieces truly elegant. The speeches were very sentimental, yet funny. I somehow held it together during my speech – although, I did declare to the guests that I thought I was going to throw up half way during my speech. Oops! The food served at the wedding was beyond yummy! The vegetarian entree was roasted butternut squash ravioli with brown butter sauce and toasted hazelnuts. Wow! I also had a great time dancing the night away at the wedding with friends and family. My grandma danced up a storm! It was great!

Enjoying: Recipe testing for A Couple Cook‘s new cookbook! I cannot tell you how excited I am for this cookbook. I just love how the cookbook revolves around raising funds for such a fantastic cause. Check out their website for more info! Please help out in any way you can :)

Pondering: New recipe ideas and features for the blog! So many thoughts and ideas, but so little time as of late. It’s wedding season right now, so I’ve been busy photographing weddings and editing shoots. After mid-August, I plan on spending a lot more time in the kitchen. Cannot wait :)

Wishing you all a fantastic week! Looking forward to posting a recipe-related post toward the end of the week. I am planning a trip out to my friend’s huge garden in the country tomorrow to pick some fresh veggies. I am certain an abundance of fresh produce will be plenty to inspire a few new dishes this week.

Awe, thank you so much for the kind words Caitlin! :) Too bad we did not live in the same city, so we could go see the Woody Allen movie together! *hah* I sat thumbing through cookbooks today looking for fall recipes. I cannot wait to start cooking with butternut squash, pumpkin, cinnamon, apples, pears…mmmm! :) *hehe*

I really struggle with my writing in particular. I’ve never been much of a writer. I can see improvement in my photography – although, I know I still have lots of growing to do. I guess the whole point is that I just ENJOY blogging and not worrying about being perfect, right? :) It’s all about expression. It’s not about being judged and graded on your writing + photos.

I haven’t seen one of these posts before but I loved reading it! I always get sucked into Big Brother too .. every summer I tell myself I won’t watch it because I only end up getting frustrated and yelling at the tv screen and I think it raises my blood pressure haha, but I still watch it anyway! And you shouldn’t be so self-conscious about blogging, you have an amazing blog and photography!

*hah* It’s so true!!!! Every summer I get so wrapped up in Big Brother…and I yell in frustration at the TV and feel bummed when a fav player gets kicked out. Ah well…it’s fun to have a guilty pleasure for the summer. *hehe*

Awe, thank you very much for your kind words! xo I guess I find blogging difficult sometimes, because you are putting yourself and your work out there…and it can be left open for criticism. And you see others who have such talent and you aspire to be “as good” one day :) But I don’t know why I feel that way! I’ve meet really nice people through blogging! *hah* Tons of supportive, lovely people.

Another fun post to read from you! Glad that the wedding went well and you got a delicious vegetarian meal! I can get wrapped up in thinking about my favourite things about fall too, but then I remember that fall means colder weather and I don’t want to think about part of it quite yet – I need more warm days! Glad you’re enjoying Secret Daughter…I might have to re-read it already because I can’t remember how it ends… Oh and I love Mumford and Sons, so I’ll have to check out Of Monsters and Men! If you haven’t checked out Avett Brothers yet, you’d probably like them too!

I know! It’s such a trade off. I LOVE fall, but I am not completely ready for summer to end. It was wonderful here in Winnipeg today. It was about 20’C and sunny. Perfect weather. Not too hot, not too cold. If it could be like this in October….i’d be completely sold on autumn :) *hehe*

I checked out Avett Brothers! Awesome recommendation. Thank you! :)

I know, I love those Fall days where the leaves are colourful but its still sunny and warm out :) Glad you liked the Avett Brothers…I listened to the samples for of monsters and men on Amazon and I liked it too – I’ll have to get the whole album for my ipod!

Me too! Sometimes it’s fun to post something that’s not food-related. :) A good way to get to know other bloggers too. Oh man, I just saw some fresh butternut squash at the market and now I am itching big-time for fall! :)

Courtney this is such a great post! It’s so lovely to get a glimpse of what’s going on with a food blogger other than what they’re eating. I had so many comments while reading this so let’s see if I can recreate them…it might be long so stick with me :)

Dreaming about – Iceland would be AMAZING! It’s supposed to be unreal. Kaston and I have also talked about taking a trip there. Especially since it’s not that far from Boston. We haven’t taken a big trip since Ireland last spring. Sigh.
Reading – I’ll have to check that book out! I love to read and take suggestions wherever I can find them! I just finished Farm City and loooved it. All about food and farming. Highly recommended.
Anticipating – FALL. ME TOO. I CAN’T WAIT!
Listening to – I just say Of Monsters and Men at Newport Folk Festival! Such great musicians. However, my favorite of NFF was Spirit Family Reunion. Totally in love with them.
Wishing – I completely understand how you feel about this. I’m not quite comfortable in my blogging shoes but I know I’m getting better (all I have to do is go look at my first posts!) so I just keep going. Even if I’m not 100% satisfied. That being said…I love your blog. Your pictures are beautiful. Perfectly lit. Staged. Love it.
Reflecting on – I’m so glad you had such a good time! It sounds like the perfect evening. And the food also sounds scrumptious :) Yesterday my sister asked me to be…her maid of honor! This being my first wedding (other than being the flower girl) I would love to chat with you about it!

Hope you are having a great weekend :)

Awe, thank you so very much for this wonderful reply!!! xo

I agree. It’s so nice to do a non food-related post sometimes and get to know other bloggers. I think I’ll do these “Currently…” posts each month to keep track of where I’m at eat month throughout the year. I hope others will do them as well.

I’ve seen photos of Iceland and it looks phenomenal. The photos ops look insane! It’s a bit of a trek from central Canada, but there are lots of airfare deals going on for the spring. Fingers crossed everything pans out!

Farm City? Sounds like an interesting book! I’ll have to check it out :)

Oooo! Thanks for the recommendation. I’m pumped to check out Spirit Family Reunion. I’m so jealous you got to see Of Monsters and Men!!!!! I hope they come here soon. or, maybe I can see them in Iceland. *dreaming*

I adore your blog! You have awesome recipes, great photos and I love how your personality shines through in your writing :) Keep up the amazing work!!! xo

Awe, you must be SO excited to be your sister’s MOH!!!! I have lots of advice, tips and hints :) *hehe*
